Rio Tinto Alcan announced that it has acquired the patent portfolio developed by Moltech Systems Ltd. for drained cathode, inert anode and related aluminium smelting technologies. 

Details of the transaction were not disclosed. 

The technologies acquired from Moltech Systems Ltd. were developed under the leadership of its founder, the renowned Italian professor, Vittorio de Nora, who dedicated much of his career to research with the purpose of creating high-efficiency and low-emission smelting techniques for the aluminium industry.

This acquisition will allow Rio Tinto Alcan, a world leader in the production of aluminium, to carry on Professor de Nora's objective of significantly advancing aluminium smelting technology," said Claude Vanvoren, vice president of Technology and R&D, Rio Tinto Alcan.
