Hatch has been working with the International Manganese Institute (IMnI) to develop a sustainability strategy and implementation program for the Manganese industry.
The program will first be practiced in Paris, France, and then carried out to ten facilities worldwide. The Environmental Services Group will develop an industry-wide Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) of IMnI’s members. The study will fulfil IMnI's sustainability outreach program, and provide the industry with information to understand and improve the full life cycle environmental impact of manganese mining, processing, and use. The output of the study will be a peer-reviewed ISO14040-compliant LCA, the first of its kind for the Manganese industry. A Life Cycle Assessment is a mass and energy balance that models the complete system boundary of a product or service. It is used to determine environmental/energy hot spots, alternative analysis and footprints. IMnI has never completed a life cycle assessment to represent its industry. The study will identify the potential mitigation hot spots for the industry as part of its sustainability strategy. The project began in February 2011 and is scheduled for completion in February 2013. Hatch Mississauga is working on the project.
